Casey Anthony defense: Caylee drowned in pool

Casey AnthonyORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Prosecutors and a defense attorney for a Florida mother charged in the death of her 2-year-old daughter each presented new, vastly different theories of how the little girl died as the trial for Casey Anthony began Tuesday.

For the first time, prosecutors said Caylee Anthony died from three pieces of duct tape being placed over her mouth and nose while a defense attorney for the mother claimed the toddler drowned in the family pool and the little girl's grandfather covered up the accident.

Casey Anthony, 25, is charged with first-degree murder. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death.

An autopsy was never able to conclude a cause of death for Caylee.

Casey Anthony waited a month before telling her mother that Caylee had disappeared during the summer of 2008, and that was only after her parents, George and Cindy Anthony, had recovered a car Casey had been driving, prosecutors said. The vehicle, which the grandparents picked up from a towing lot, had a foul odor inside.

During the month Caylee was missing, prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick told jurors Casey went shopping, visited friends and hung out with her boyfriend. Between each description of how Casey spent her time, Burdick said: "Where is Caylee Marie Anthony?"

She also described Internet searches done on a computer at Casey's home that showed queries for chloroform, neck-breaking and alcohol.

Prosecutors said everything Casey Anthony did was based on a web of lies and that the evidence points to her as the killer.

"Casey Anthony ... appeared to be ... a loving mother, trying to provide support for her daughter," Burdick said. "But as the evidence in this case will show, that was an illusion."

Casey previously said a baby sitter kidnapped the girl, but her attorney suggested a different set of events during his opening statement.

Casey's attorney, Jose Baez, said she was abused by her father as a child, an allegation George Anthony later denied on the witness stand. George Anthony also told jurors that Caylee didn't die at his house.

Baez also claimed that Casey's brother made advances toward her and was given a paternity test to see if he was Caylee's father. All those secrets eventually led to the cover up of Caylee's drowning, Baez said.

"You will hear about a family that is dysfunctional," Baez said. "Ugly things. Secret things."

Baez said Caylee and her grandmother swam most of Father's Day on June 15, 2008, and suggested that Cindy Anthony forgot to pull up a ladder that prevented the toddler from climbing into the pool on her own. Baez suggested that Caylee slipped into the pool the next day when no one was looking.

The distraught family panicked and didn't call police, he said.

"Casey should have called 911. That's what she's guilty of she's, not guilty of murder. This is not a murder case," Baez said.

Prosecutors offered a timeline of Casey's whereabouts based on cell phone records. It stretched from the time Caylee was last seen by her grandparents until her remains were discovered by a meter reader in woods near her home in December 2008.

Jurors were shown images on a screen of a photo of Caylee taken on Father's Day alongside an image of the little girl's skeletal remains.

During a lengthy opening statement, Baez said George Anthony planted duct tape matching the brand later found over Caylee's mouth in a way that would implicate Casey.

"George Anthony took certain steps to make sure he was as far away from this situation and that Casey would end up taking the blame for this," Baez said.

Baez also blamed the police department for botching the investigation, alleging they wanted to feed a media frenzy about a mother killing her child instead of investigating a mundane drowning.

Police "had murder on their minds. This couldn't be an accident," Baez said. "You'll find that professional police work took a backseat in this case. We were more concerned about the public than doing their jobs."

Casey was emotional throughout the day, crying periodically and wiping her nose with a tissue.

UPDATE: Casey’s defense attorney dropped a bombshell in his opening statements. He told the jury that Casey’s daughter Caylee wasn’t murdered but had drowned and Casey lied about it.

Casey Anthony Trial: Psychopath or Telling the Truth?

The Casey Anthony trial, for the alleged murder of her toddler Caylee Anthony, is chilling and bizarre. It’s a mystery that has captured the public’s attention ever since the media started covering it in late 2008.

'Bachelor' Brad and Emily: It's Over Already?

( Bachelor Brad ) - EXCLUSIVE: Moments after Brad Womack proposed to Emily Maynard on last night's 'Bachelor' finale, millions of fans were shocked to learn that the couple have already gone through a breakup, and while Brad told viewers he was ready for marriage, sources tell me the couple has since broken up for good.

"Emily is so insecure, she just isn't cut out for all the fame and attention her relationship is under," a show insider tells me. "The six weeks of shooting the show in paradise was easy, away from prying eyes and photographers, but since they both returned to their normal lives things have been a disaster."

During the finale, Emily, mom to 5-year-old daughter Ricki, accepted Brad's proposal, beating out fellow contestant Chantal O'Brien for Womack's heart. The actual proposal was a tender, romantic moment of television.

"You're so much more to me than a leap of faith," he said. "You're the one. You're my once in a lifetime. I'm asking you to give me your forever."

Later, Emily admitted having trouble watching Brad get intimate with different ladies every Monday night. She also admitted that Brad's temper in real life also took her by surprise.

Despite their problems, however, Brad has been trying valiantly to make the relationship work and publicly, he's now saying the two are trying to rebound after a bumpy start to the relationship.

"At long last, Emily and I can be open to the world and each other about our relationship," they said in joint statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday. "Though we are madly in love, it has been a bumpy couple of months for us and our priority right now is to focus on our relationship."

But an in-the-know network producer tells me their problems run deep and go beyond the normal pangs of a distressed couple.

"Emily is not able to forgive Brad for what she considers cheating week-after-week with other girls," my source says. "It's always hard sending the couple back into reality after they have been living in paradise, but no one in the history of the show has had as hard a time adjusting as Emily."

Like many fans, my source "would love to say they are going to make it, but they don't. After we taped the 'After the Rose,' it was clear to everyone that this one was not going to work."

Too bad, we were rooting for you.

Radiation Exposure

Radiation exposure: Nuclear experts criticize, advise Japan

International experts weigh in as Japanese authorities downplay the threat of radiation exposure -- although they are beginning to acknowledge the situation to be more menacing than originally believed.

International nuclear experts are keeping a close eye on Japan as the island nation, ravaged by a record earthquake and the tsunami it created, struggles to contain a nuclear crisis threatening to spiral into catastrophe.

Japanese authorities insisted Tuesday the heightened levels of radiation detected as far away as Tokyo were unlikely to harm human health, but they were gradually acknowledging that the situation was far more menacing than they reported in the immediate aftermath of Friday's natural disasters.

Neither Japanese officials with the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency nor experts with the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency revised an earlier evaluation of the crisis at the Fukushima complex in northeast Japan that put the severity of the situation at 4 on the 7-point range of the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

Photos: Scenes of earthquake destruction

That spectrum rates nuclear incidents from a Level 1, meaning a minor problem with little human consequence, to Level 7, on the scale of the catastrophic Chernobyl nuclear accident 25 years ago.

Experts with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission told President Obama that they were in general agreement with the steps Japan had taken in response to the crisis at the six-reactor Fukushima facility, which has suffered fires, explosions and several hours' exposure of the nuclear fuel rods.

Obama is "constantly being briefed" on the events at the nuclear complex in the area of Japan that took the full force of the magnitude 9.0 quake and the worst inundation of the tsunami, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington.

At IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Director General Yukiya Amano conceded that the core of one of the Fukushima reactors, the No. 2 unit that sustained an explosion Tuesday, might have been damaged. He said the severity of the explosion's damage to the unit was still unclear but that plant operators estimated no more than 5% of the nuclear fuel had been lost in the most dire development at the stricken complex.

Amano said the reactor's containment vessel also might have been damaged but that there had been no confirmation of reports that the housing had been compromised by the blast.

"Is it a crack? Is it a hole? Is it nothing? That we don't know yet," Amano told reporters. He noted that the pressure level in the containment structure hadn't gone down, as would be expected if the cladding were broken.

Other nuclear experts contended Japan was downplaying the seriousness of the situation at Fukushima.

"It's clear we are at Level 6," said André-Claude LaCoste, president of the French nuclear safety agency. He said that level was akin to the 1979 crisis at Three Mile Island, the United States' most serious nuclear incident, and only one degree below the 1986 catastrophe at Chernobyl, the northern Ukrainian nuclear complex where an explosion during a botched testing operation blew the roof off the reactor and released a radiation cloud that circled the Earth.

Russian nuclear specialist Yuli Andreyev told Reuters news agency in Vienna that the disaster at Fukushima looked to be the result of the nuclear industry putting production and profit ahead of safety.

"After Chernobyl, all the force of the nuclear industry was directed to hide this event, for not creating damage to their reputation," Andreyev, who was part of the Chernobyl emergency response effort, said of what he saw as a knee-jerk impulse within the industry to cover up problems.

Andreyev said the IAEA was culpable as well as the Japanese commercial nuclear industry because the U.N. agency let corporate interests guide its policymaking and standard-setting.

Experts trying to evaluate the situation from foreign vantages appeared to agree that too little was known about the accidents that had plagued the Fukushima complex to gauge accurately the threat of escalation or risk to Japan's people and environment.

Ides of March

Ides of March

Ides of March: Beware the Ides of March!

Julius Caesar has been dead for thousands of years, but since we’re literature nerds, the Ides of March is pretty much a holiday for us.

The term ‘Ides’ was used for the 15th day of the month of March on the Roman calendar. Back in B.C. times the Ides of March was a day dedicated to the god Mars and a cause for celebration.

It is also the day in 44 B.C. that Julius Caesar was stabbed to death in the Roman Senate by Brutus.

Caesar had been warned by a seer that something horrible would befall him on the Ides of March. Caesar later joked, “Well, the Ides of March have come.” The seer replied, “Ay, they have come, but they are not gone.”

Naturally, we are going to take every opportunity to play out that scene on Tuesday. And you should too. Be warned.

“Et tu Brute?!”

And if you really want to celebrate Shakespeare style, head over to Hofstra University through March 20.

Before there was One Life to Live, Melrose Place and Desperate Housewives, the Bard got his dirty on…live…at a time when a less-than-entertained audience throwing things on the stage was the norm.

There was no TiVo, no fake laughter to dub in, no commercials, no take two’s.Yet, this guy managed to keep the house packed.

The first Hofstra Shakespeare Festival, featuring Julius Caesar, opened in 1950. Since then people like comic genius Phil Rosenthal, the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond and Tony-nominees like Tom McGowan and Peter Friedman have been involved. Steve Buscemi, Kyra Sedgewick and Brian Dennehy performed in the Shakespeare Festival as teens.

This year the main play will be The War of the Roses, A One-Evening Version of Shakespeare’s Henry VI Trilogy, the companion play a new one-hour adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream titled What Fools! In Charlie Sheen language, this would be considered “bi-winning.”

Nuclear Reactor

Nuclear Reactor

Nuclear reactor explosion, not nuclear explosion

( Nuclear Reactor ) - It is not skilful engineering or clever reactor design that precludes a nuclear explosion at a nuclear power plant, it is the laws of physics.

The materials in a nuclear reactor core and the uranium enrichment level make impossible a nuclear explosion of the type for which nuclear weapons are designed. Despite this, repeatedly we have heard talk of nuclear explosions in the media from observers, pundits, anti-nuclear activists and journalists.

An explosion at a nuclear reactor is not a nuclear explosion and can never be. Power plant grade uranium contains the fissile form of uranium, the uranium-235 isotope, at just a few percent, the majority is non-fissile U238. Compare that to weapons grade uranium which has to contain 80% or more of U235. Moreover, a nuclear weapon requires that a critical mass of the radioactive material be forced together quickly in a relatively small volume. This cannot happen in a nuclear plant, the low concentration of fissile U235 means it can never reach an explosively critical mass of fissile material but there is also no process that could force it together into a small volume quickly, anyway.

The same applies to the mixed oxide type reactor that use plutonium oxide and uranium oxide. It should be noted that plutonium is generated by the normal operation of a uranium-using power plant, although again it is the wrong ratio of isotopes for a nuclear weapon.

Essentially, the fuel concentration in a power plant is far too low to build the high-energy neutron stream needed to cause an explosive chain reaction. As to nucleear meltdown. The term nuclear meltdown is laden with China Syndrome style drama, but it does not lead to a nuclear explosion; a lot of heat is produced, and the nuclear fuel melts (happens at about 2700 Celsius). That’s it. Moreover, the melting process leads to less fissile material being in close contact when it spreads and melts through the floor of the reactor and the rock beneath. Incidentally, the hypothetical limit on depth the molten fuel could penetrate is about 15-20 metres, not the Earth’s core. Inevitably, the chain reaction that generates the heat slows of its own accord.

None of this is to say that what has happened in Japan is any less of a tragedy, it is just that phrases like nuclear meltdown and nuclear explosion used in this context in no way help, they spread fear, give tabloid headline writers scaremongering fodder, and are being hijacked repeatedly for personal agendas. Conventional explosions do occur, as we’ve learned this week from tragic events in Japan. But, these are not nuclear explosions. There is a risk of particles of radioactive material entering the atmosphere or the ocean, but this does not amount to the impact of an actual nuclear explosion.

New Scientist has a useful summary of what is happening at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan following the Sendai earthquake and subsequent devastating tsunami.

Lisa Rinna and Star Jones Got 'Ugly' Behind the Scenes of 'Apprentice'

Lisa Rinna felt the underside of Donald Trump's boot last night on 'Celebrity Apprentice,' and the bad blood between her and Star Jones, the mastermind behind her defeat and the first to throw her under the bus during the episode, could not be any uglier.

"Since the show wrapped, there's been no love lost between Star and Lisa," one of the contestants tells me. "Things got so ugly between them that NBC legal had to get involved."

I'm told that Mark Burnett Productions and the Trump Organization had to step in and get the network involved during Lisa's short stint on the show. Both sides aren't talking about what sparked legal's attention or even who is the culprit in this mess.

That said, you could see from just watching the show that these two ladies clashed from the moment they met. Star pushed to get Lisa chosen as team leader, primarily because she thought she'd blow it and get fired. Even NeNe Leakes admitted it, saying, "We choose Lisa because we didn't think she would handle it, and it's best to get her out now."

Lisa was tasked with spearheading the creation of a children's book, but she soon had to defuse a battle between Marlee Matlin and Dionne Warwick. Throughout it all, she and Star butted heads.

We all knew that Star, the direct-talking lawyer, and the more relaxed Lisa were never going to be friends, but no one could have predicted it would ever get this ugly.

"Lisa feels betrayed by Star and Dionne Warwick and has never in her life been exposed to such a negative environment," a friend of Lisa tells me. "She comes from a place of love and refuses to fight dirty even if that means she would not win. To be honest, she's happy it's all over and has moved on."

"At least she left with her class and dignity in place," Lisa's friend tells me.

With "class" in mind, here's a clip from last night's show when The Donald compliments Lisa's lips.

Happy Pi Day

Happy Pi Day

Get out your favorite circular objects, people, it’s Pi Day 2011!

As the math and science enthusiasts among us already know, March 14 (i.e. 3/14) is official Pi Day — a day to celebrate the number Pi, identified by the Greek letter π, which is used to calculate the circumference of a circle.

Pi is most often shortened to 3.14. But because the number is both irrational and transcendental, it “will continue indefinitely without repeating,” as the official Pi Day website, PiDay.org, kindly explains.

With the use of handy computers, Pi has now been calculated out to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. It is Pi’s mysterious nature — the fact that it can never be entirely known — that has helped generate the adoration for it held by the mathematically inclined.

The famous symbol for Pi, π, was first used by Welsh mathematician William Jones in his work Synopsis Palmariorum Matheseos, which was published in 1706. It wasn’t until its adoption by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737, however, that the Pi symbol gained widespread popularity.

So, what is the purpose of Pi Day?

“It’s primarily a chance to have fun with the topic of math and science,” David Blater, author of The Joy of Pi, tells Time.com‘s NewsFeed blog. “And while it celebrates Pi officially, it’s more of an excuse to get excited and show the fun side of math and science.”

The first Pi Day was celebrated in 1989 at the San Francisco Exploratorium, which remains one of Pi Day’s primary promoters. Today, Pi Day celebrations take place in countless grade schools across the country.

While a wide variety of Pi Day celebrations are acceptable, some of the most popular include circle-measuring parties, watching the movie Pi, Pi recitation contests (to see who can accurately recall the most digits) and, of course, eating actual pie!

So get out there, and enjoy all things circular. It would make your maths teachers proud.
