Marriages marked a happy end to a year of celebrity nuptials in 2007, which figures such as Norika Fujiwara and Joe Odagiri topping headlines.
Norika Fujiwara, 36, married 33-year-old comedian Tomonori Jinnai in a wedding at Ikuta Shrine in Kobe on Feb. 17. At a lavish reception on May 30, Fujiwara appeared in a white dress, and the pair welcomed 500 guests.
Because of the gap in performance fees for Fujiwara and Jinnai, their wedding was referred to as a "status-gap" marriage, but they appear to be getting on well as a newly married couple, being selected together as judges for the year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red-White Singing Contest) aired by NHK.
Celebrity Uno Kanda, 32, turned eyes with her extravagant wedding to Takuro Nishimura, 37, the manager of an entertainment-related business. Her dress cost 40 million yen and she wore a tiara priced at 300 million yen, with the overall cost of the wedding climbing to about 600 million yen.
On Thursday, actor Joe Odagiri and actress Yuu Kashii suddenly came out with news of their marriage. The following day, actress Kumiko Aso, who appeared in "Jiko Keisatsu" with Odagiri, gave a surprise marriage announcement.
Another actress in the news was Takako Matsu, who also revealed her marriage to 46-year-old musician Yoshiyuki Sahashi on her official Web site on Friday.
Two more celebrities who caught fans off guard were actress Aoi Miyazaki, 22, and actor Sosuke Takaoka, who secretly got hitched on July 25. On Aug. 9, Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters baseball pitcher Yu Darvish and actress Saeko came out with a marriage announcement, and later it emerged that Saeko was pregnant. The pair registered their marriage on Nov. 12. The Fighters' win of the Pacific League championship provided extra happy news for Darvish.
Also pregnant was 20-year-old Nozomi Tsuji, a former member of the all-girl J-pop group Morning Musume, who revealed on May 10 that she was tying the knot with 26-year-old actor Taiyo Sugiura. Because she was pregnant, Tsuji stepped down from performing, prompting Sugirua to offer his deep apologies. The couple's baby daughter Noa was happily born on Nov. 26.
Yoshihiko Inohara, 31, of the pop group V6 and 30-year-old actress Asaka Seto got married on Sept. 28, 12 years after they first met. Another couple to wed after a long relationship were actress Eiko Koike and professional wrestler Wataru Sakata, who had been together in a relationship for five years.
Entertainment fans will no doubt have their eyes peeled in 2008 for more celebrity couples tying the knot.
Actress Norika Fujiwara, comedian husband to judge year-end singing contest
Actress Norika Fujiwara, 36, and her comedian husband Tomonori Jinnnai, 33, will serve as judges during the annual year-end celebrity singing contest, NHK officials announced.
The couple, who attracted national attention with their highly publicized marriage in February, will be part of the jury panel for the 58th annual "Kohaku Utagassen" (Red and White Singing Contest) to be aired live on the New Year's Eve on Monday, the program's broadcaster NHK said on Wednesday.
Other jurors include actress Aoi Miyazaki, 22, who will appear in the lead role in next year's NHK drama "Atsuhime," as well as fellow actress Yui Aragaki, 19, who also made her singing debut this year in the blockbuster film "Koizora."
